Founder & Lead Clinician
BSc BDS MSc Aes.Med. PGDip Endod. PGCert MJDF RCS (Eng)
Dr MJ has been treating aesthetic patients for over 15 years, but her interest in the face goes a lot futher than what you can see in your mirror.
She wants to know why treatments work, what's happening beneath the skin, and what to do when things don't go to plan.
That curiosity has taken her from treating patients in Liverpool to teaching practitioners internationally, publishing clinical research, and becoming a specialist in some of the most challenging complication cases in aesthetic medicine.
But for all the teaching and research, Dr MJ is still very much a hands-on clinician. And looking after her own patients is a huge part of what she loves about the job.
MJ was introduced to aesthetics long before she had patients of her own. Her mum was a GP offering anti-wrinkle treatments back in the early 2000s, when the industry looked rather different to how it does today.
She qualified as a dentisty at the University of Manchester in 2009 and began treating aesthetic patients shortly afterwards. In 2013, she co-founded Smileworks Liverpool, before going on to complete a Master's in Aesthetic Medicine with Distinction at Queen Mary University of London in 2016.
But she didn't stop studying there. She also completed a Master's qualification in Orthodontics, alongside further postgraduate training in other areas of dentistry and medical education.
By 2022, MJ had decided to concentrate entirely on aesthetic medicine.
Today, as founder and lead clinician of Dr MJ Clinic, she brings together everything she's spent her career learning about: facial anatomy, injectable treatments, patient safety, and the ageing face.
If you come to MJ expecting her to take one quick look at you and tell you that you need filler, you're probably in a for a longer conversation.
She wants to understand your face properly. How it moves, where you've lost volume, how your skin is ageing, what treatments you've had before, and, most importantly, what you're hoping to achieve.
Some patients come in for a tiny adjustment. Others have been considering treatment for years, or have something specific that's been bothering them.
Whether it's lip filler, facial rejuvenation, Sculptra, or a more complicated concern, MJ's approach is the same: work out what's actually going to help before mindlessly reaching for a syringe.
And yes, she'll tell you if she doesn't think a treatment is right for you.
She'd much rather you leave with good advice than have something done that you didn't really need.
Some injectors avoid difficult cases. MJ has spent much of her career taking them on.
From problematic filler and unexplained lumps to complications that just won't respond to previous treatment, MJ sees patients referred from across the UK and internationally, many of whom have already visted several practitioners without getting the answers they need.
One of her most valuable tools is facial ultrasound, which allows her to see what's happening beneath the skin, identify certain types of filler, and plan treatment with greater precision.
This also shapes how she approaches her everyday treatments. When you've spent years seeing what can go wrong, you become especially particular about getting things right in the first place.
Explore The Complication Clinic
MJ doesn't just treat patients. She spends a significant amount of her time teaching other medical professionals how to do it properly.
She founded the Aesthetic Training HUB because she believes that better education is one of the most important ways to make the aesthetics industry safer.
Today, she teaches facial anatomy, ultrasound, injectable techniques, and complication management through hands-on training, online education, and one-to-one mentoring.
Her work has taken her to conferences and training events in the UK and internationally. She's also worked with major names in the aesthetics and ultrasound industries, including Clarius, GE Healthcare, Sinclair Pharma, and Galderma.
For MJ, education isn't something separate from being a clinician. The more practitioners understand about anatomy, the products they're using, and the problems they might encounter, the better they can look after their patients.
And raising those standards is something she cares about enormously.
Explore The Aesthetic Training HUBMJ has never been particularly interested in doing something a certain way just because that's how it's always been done.
She's an advocate for better regulation, better practitioner education, and more informed approaches to patient safety.
Alongside her clinical and teaching work, she's contributed to peer-reviewed medical research, including a published case report examining a dermal filler reaction following COVID-19 infection.
She's also worked as an expert witness in aesthetic medicine and regularly contributes to discussions around industry standards, complications, and patient safety.
Her expertise has attracted attention from the national press and specialist medical and aesthetics publications, where she's shared her views on everything from injectable treatment fads to the future of aesthetic medicine.
